Notes

Read for the first time as a child. Clark Gable's father bought the complete works by Shakespeare to him. Eventually, "Clark got hooked on Shakespeare and especially the sonnets, an interest the he tried to keep secret all his life because some might consider it queer and unmanly. But at home alone or in the company of those he trusted, he loved to read poetry aloud, to savour words and meaning" (Harris, p. 7)
