In a letter to a friend, written when he was a teenager, C. S. Lewis writes that "…though I have no personal experiences of the thing they call love, I have what is better: the experiences of Sappho, of Euripides, of Catullus, of Shakespeare, of Spenser, of Austen, of Brontë, of … of anyone else I have read" (Wilson, p. 12; 45)
